Fellowship opportunities at the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research

July 30, 2015 by Ommund Carsten Vareberg

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research (GEI) in Braunschweig, Germany will award several short-term fellowships for visiting researchers in 2016.
Application deadline: 15 September 2015.

The GEI’s fellowship programme supports research on textbooks and other educational media. Fellowships aim to provide both young and established academics and textbook authors with the opportunity to use the extensive international textbook collection in the GEI’s specialist library, to conduct comparative studies, exchange ideas and discuss findings with the academic staff of the Institute.

Individual fellowships of 1 000 EUR per month are awarded for research stays of between two weeks and a maximum of six weeks. Depending on the availability of funds, assistance with travel expenses (50 per cent of expenses to a maximum of 500 EUR) may be provided. Potential fellows should stipulate in their application whether they require travel expenses to be reimbursed. Established academics and practitioners are also invited to apply for the Otto-Bennemann-Grant (2 000 EUR per month).

Applications are invited from academics, individuals involved in the production of textbooks (design, writing, editing, etc.), employees of educational publishers, and other individuals involved in the development of curricula and textbooks. Research projects should be relevant to the collection in the GEI’s specialist library. The application should contain (in one PDF-file):

  • the complete fellowship application form (cover letter)
  • a short curriculum vitae (focussing on academic career) with information on current position and language skills
  • a list of publications, if any
  • a concise project description with details of topic, research objectives and methods (max. 3 pages)
  • list of literature (bibliography) to be studied in the library of the GEI
  • an outline of the research plan for the desired duration of the stay at the GEI

Fellows must reside in Braunschweig during their period of research at the GEI, and, if desired, can be accommodated in the guest rooms allocated by the association of Friends of the Georg Eckert Institute.

All visiting fellows are requested to produce a research report (max. 2 pages) following their stay at the GEI.

Research may be conducted at the GEI at any time during 2016. Candidates will receive notification of the selection panel’s decision by the end of November 2015.

Please send your application, containing all required documents in the required format (in one PDF-file, max. 2 MB), by e-mail to: fellowship@gei.de to arrive no later than 15 September 2015
