The International Association for Research on Textbooks and Educational Media (IARTEM) in co-operation with University of Ostrava, Czech Republic is pleased to invite professionals from all over the world who work in the field of textbooks and educational media research and development to participate in the twelfth IARTEM conference.
The conference will take place in Ostrava, Czech Republic, 18 – 20 September 2013.
The theme of the conference will be:
Textbooks and Educational Media in a Digital Age

- The use of textbooks and educational media

The program will include:
PhD Day on Tuesday 17 September 2013
PhD. students will present their research projects (research problem, research design, methodology). Experienced researchers will provide comments on dissertation projects presented by PhD students.
Roundtable workshop
“Teaching standards: Classroom teaching and learning materials”
The participants are invited to enter the roundtables with their contributions and/or to discuss the topics.
Theoretical and methodological session
This session invites research on textbooks and educational media which focuses on theoretical and methodological questions: theory and concepts in educational textbook and media research.
Local school visit
The visit of a primary and lower secondary school in Ostrava will be arranged for conference participants.

Conference fee
- Non-members: 200 Euro
- IARTEM members: 140 Euro
- IARTEM membership (two years): 50 Euro
- PhD and Master students: 60 Euro
- Conference dinner: 40 Euro
The conference fee includes: conference programme, two lunches, coffee breaks, refreshment.

Papers
The working language will be English, and all abstracts will be written in English. Please paste your abstract into the registration form.
Papers can be submitted after the conference. All papers will be published in conference volume, subject to a process of editing and review by leading researchers. Extended versions of papers may be submitted to the IARTEM e-Journal and to the journal Orbis scholae. A special issue of Orbis scholae in English, focused on textbooks and educational media will be published.
Venue
The conference will take place in the city of Ostrava, at the New City Hall, Prokesovo Square 1 (opening, keynote presentations, conference close) and at the Faculty of Education building, Mlynska Street 5 (workshops, round tables).
Accommodation
You will get a special price in some hotels if you state that you are going to take part in the IARTEM conference:
- Hotel Maria*** (www.hotel-maria.cz/en ): single room €44, double room €54, prices are guaranteed by August 31, about 5 min walking to the faculty building at Mlynska Street;
- Hotel Bonum*** (www.hotel-bonum.cz ): single room €47, double room – 2 persons €77, double room – 1 person €49, prices are guaranteed by June 15, about 5 min walking to the faculty building at Mlynska Street;
There are other good hotels in Ostrava, e.g. Hotel Mercure**** in the center of the city (www.mercureostrava.cz, only 2 min to Mlynska St.): single room €80-100, double room approx. €110; or Hotel Park Inn**** (http://www.parkinn.cz/hotel-ostrava): single room €80, about 15 min walking to Mlynska St. (you can use public transport or taxi, of course).
If you prefer cheaper place to stay, there is a dormitory type of accommodation in Hotel Garni*** ( www.hotelvsb.cz): single room €28, double room €36. You will have to use public transport to get to the conference place (approx. 25 min by tram or by bus).
You need to book your own accommodation and pay directly to the hotel of your choice.
Transport
There is a good train connection from Prague or Vienna to Ostrava. It takes about 3 hours and the trains are really comfortable and quite cheap (Prague – Ostrava for about €20). There is an English version of train schedules available at: http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlaky/spojeni/. If you decide to fly to Ostrava – Mosnov airport, it takes about 30 min by taxi or bus to get to the city centre.
